What can you do to get ready for ETA?
f you hold settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you will not need an ETA. But your exemption will be based on your UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) account (which is created when a citizen applies to the EU Settlement Scheme), so you should keep it up to date and upload all your valid Swiss identity documents that you use for travel. This will be particularly important for entering the UK once the ETA scheme applies to Swiss citizens.

If you currently hold Indefinite Leave to Enter or Remain (ILR) status obtained before Brexit please see Question 9 in our Brexit FAQ for information on what you need to do to have your immigration status electronically recorded, for example by applying for a Biometric Residence Permit.

If you are a Swiss-UK dual citizen, you should enter the UK on a British passport.

The UK government is replacing physical immigration documents with digital proof of immigration status, called eVisa, by 2025. Examples are:
  • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
  • legacy paper documents, including passports that contain an ink stamp or vignette sticker (where the holder has Indefinite Leave to Remain or Indefinite Leave to Enter)
  • Biometric Residence Card (BRC)
If you currently use one of these documents to prove your residence rights in the UK, you need to take action to create a UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) account. This will not affect your underlying immigration status and it will be free of charge. Visit the UK government website for more information and to sign up to receive updates.
